Job Description:

The Director, Business Intelligence & Data Administration (Director) will report directly to the Vice President & Chief Information Officer (CIO).  The Director will be charged with the task of coordinating and leading the institutional data architecture, coordinating analytics efforts across the enterprise, and developing a support strategy and plan to ensure data quality throughout the process of data extraction from source systems to end user applications and reporting.

Scope: The Director will lead all technical and tactical initiatives related to institutional analytics and will have direct line leadership responsibilities for the Business Intelligence and Data Administration managers, analysts, and developers.

Working with the other application team Directors and key individuals in the Health System, Academic Enterprise, Research Enterprise and Educational Programs, the Director will provide the leadership and vision for data administration, business intelligence and analytics.  This individual will ensure that UTMB leverages its data to support its mission.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work with institutional leaders to determine appropriate metrics and key performance indicators that are linked to mission and institution objectives
  • Define, articulate, and deliver the information, reports, and analytics to UTMB’s key stakeholder groups.
  • Participate in and/or lead committees related to the use of business intelligence tools and processes.
  • Design and develop applications, dashboards, scorecards, and operational reports to support the institutional initiatives
  • Recommend data administration projects that utilize vendor delivered functionality where available
  • Design and architect the data management architecture that is necessary to support institutional data needs
  • Identify and recommend master data management solutions
  • Oversee security of all data housed in the Enterprise Data Warehouse
  • Devise a strategy for Business Intelligence and Data Administration software and hardware upgrade paths and lead the projects to completion
  • Recommend improvement projects and initiatives as products and processes mature
  • Provide technical expertise on systems, market trends, technology directions, and product directions related to decision support, business intelligence, and analytics.
  • Work closely with the Directors of Administrative Information Systems, Enterprise Information Systems, Clinical Information Systems, and Revenue Cycle Systems to incorporate data from these systems into the data administration architecture.
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures related to data management and use at UTMB.
  • Develop a technically competent, proactive, customer-service oriented, high-performing team.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced technical skills in data design and architecture and related tools.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate at all organizational levels, understand the institution’s business, mission areas and goals, and translate them to information technology initiatives.
  • Adept and comfortable working with academic leaders, researchers, clinicians, and finance leaders.
  • Ability to teach and mentor other team members and peers.
  • Excellent presentation skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability to create PowerPoint presentations that convey technical information in a manner that is comfortable for non-technical recipients.
  • Knowledge of health care analytics, as well as medical, research, and statistical terminology.
  • Must be decisive, flexible and results oriented with the ability and desire to achieve goals quickly.
  • Ability to deliver and thrive in a changing environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in computer science, healthcare administration or related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years progressive experience working in a directly related area of information technology, preferably in an academic medical center or dynamic and complex healthcare organization.
  • Minimum of 4 years of directly leading and managing teams.
  • Extensive expertise and/or demonstrated experience with business intelligence tools (i.e. Oracle, Microsoft); designing, reporting and delivering analytical solutions; data management and warehousing, and the strategic use of information.
  • Experience in the implementation of a cloud strategy for data architecture using Azure tools such as Azure Data Lake, Azure Managed Instance, Azure Data Warehouse, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Analysis Services.
  • Knowledge and experience in transitioning legacy data warehouses, data marts, and other data repositories to a cloud-based data analytics platform.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA, MHA, or equivalent related advanced degree
