Senior Vice President & Dean, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences
JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Vice President and Dean, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost and oversees all academic graduate programs. He/she is responsible for developing and overseeing service-oriented processes and a robust infrastructure in support of UTMB’s rapidly-expanding graduate programs. Working closely with the Deans of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Professions; Chief Research Officer and clinical and basic science departments, he/she is responsible for ensuring that a comprehensive infrastructure for graduate education exists. This infrastructure will strengthen and streamline all key functional areas that support school and departments enhancing UTMB’s graduate programs while preserving financial integrity. The Senior Vice President and Dean, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) develops and balances between client service via graduate program faculty members with high level of operational efficiency.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides leadership and general oversight of all aspects of the Graduate School including: evaluation and enforcement of policies governing Graduate School structure, faculty appointments, graduate assistantships, policies and procedures, student admissions, degree requirements and thesis completion.
- Responsible for working with the Deans of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions to conduct periodic external reviews, including evaluations of individual degree programs.
- Oversees student eligibility for completion of all graduate degree and non-degree programs. Responsible for approval of graduate degree and non-degree academic transcripts.
- Committee responsibilities: President’s Executive Committee, Institutional Conflict Committee, Executive Committee-Graduate School, Council of Deans, and Executive Committees in the School of Medicine.
- Ensures that policies and procedures required by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board have been met.
- Ensures accreditation requirements involving the programs of the Graduate School are met in a timely manner.
- Strategic planning activities for graduate education.
- Development and administration of the Graduate School budget.
- Identifies and distributes graduate student fellowship and assistant funding.
- Oversees development and implementation of a strategic enrollment management plan for graduate program recruitment and admission.
- Oversees research program productivity and performance for funding success within graduate school

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree and 10 or more years’ relevant experience ideally in a graduate school capacity, at least three years of which were in a leadership / administrative capacity.
Preferred Qualifications:
10 years of graduate school experience with progressing responsibilities, including experience in the oversight and leadership of graduate school operations within a large and complex academic medical center. Must qualify for a faculty position at least at the Professor rank.
