Director, Accounting (Partially remote work)
Job Description:
To assist finance leadership in organizational development, benchmarking, operational reporting, scorecards, management, reporting, performance management, measuring trends, budgeting, analysis and other financial activities with a broad functional and / or organizational scope, specifically leading the General Accounting efforts of the institution and coordinating finance transformation initiatives geared towards continuous accounting.
Essential Job Functions:
Provides day-to-day management to the General Accounting Office, specifically, the accounting activities related to institutional initiatives and coordination with Health System and Academic Enterprise. The Director of Accounting provides leadership, guidance, and oversight to staff regarding the proper accounting of revenues and expenditures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, accounting for State Appropriations, reporting to the Uniform Statewide Accounting System, and continuous improvement of the control environment with particular emphasis on new approaches to governance and controls through finance transformation. Assist Financial Accounting and Reporting leadership in organizational development, benchmarking, operational reporting, scorecards, management reporting, performance management, measuring trends, budgeting, analysis and other financial activities with a broad functional or organizational scope. This includes prioritizing work flow and load; managing the monthly and annual ledger close process including recording of accruals; coordinating continuous accounting initiatives and finance related robotic process automation; financial statement review including variance analysis; maintenance of the general ledger; monitoring departmental cost center reconciliations; oversight of balance sheet account reconciliations; coordinating preparation of audit responses and the preparation of PBC lists, assisting with annual budget and forecasting; filing of statutory reports related to UTMB's blended component units; developing and reporting of operational metrics.
Technical Performance
- Implement and maintain procedures to ensure timely, accurate month-end and fiscal year-end accounting close processes.
- Review and approve journal entries.
- Monitor deferred revenue balances to ensure that deferrals are being recognized as appropriate.
- Prepare annual operating budgets for departmental costs.
- Provide day-to-day direction for the operations of the general accounting group.
- Review and revise business process to strengthen internal controls for balance sheet account reconciliations and cost center expense reconciliations.
- Review and revise business processes to ensure best practices are in place and that appropriate internal controls exist to assure recovery-related revenues and expenditures are accounted for in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Prepare decision support and ad hoc reports as requested for UTMB leadership
Administrative and Supervisory
- Supervise professional and clerical staff, including hiring, training, performance appraisal, discipline and termination.
- Develop staff to provide the highest quality accounting services to stakeholders. Ensure staff competency. Provide professional and personal development through sound performance management practices.
- Cross train and develop staff for flexibility across functions. Maintain adequate staffing.
- Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.
External Relations and Development
- Actively participate with Business and Finance colleagues in completing initiatives, goals, and priorities.
- Develop productive relationships with UTMB personnel across campus while accomplishing institutional and departmental objectives.
Marginal or Periodic Functions:
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field and 10 years of relevant work experience with increasing responsibilities in accounting, and prior supervisory experience. Certified Public Accountant or Masters’ Degree in related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Related experience at an academic medical center is desirable.
