Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an environmental, natural, applied science, or related field or equivalent and seven years of related experience.

Job Description:
Provides professional knowledge and expertise in the operation and support of Environmental Health & Safety in compliance with regulatory agencies, national guidelines and institutional policies.

Department Overview:

The EHS team of safety, health, and environmental professionals work to protect the health & safety of faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors at UTMB as well as ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Our mission is to work with our customers to provide a workplace free of recognized hazards in support of the UTMB mission to improve health for the people of Texas and around the world.

Job Duties:

  • Initiates audits to develop and ensure administrative and engineering controls are appropriate for the level of risk and design of the facility.
  • Monitors effectiveness of multidisciplinary problem resolution activities.
  • Initiates benchmarking activities.
  • Coordinates agency audits.
  • Recognizes politics associated with various aspects of the multidisciplinary projects.
  • Anticipates, develops and implements methods needed to remain state of the art in the field.
  • Develops others through assignments, formal training or other experiences - Assists staff with how answers are derived.
  • Keeps current in field and immediately utilizes and applies new information fully.
  • Identifies problems or non-compliance issues.  Knows, understands and identifies all areas of expertise needed to resolve problems and then coordinates a team of those with needed expertise.
  • Monitors and takes actions on projects to ensure completion.
  • Provides expert knowledge of diverse chemical, physical and biological hazards.
  • Recommends and/or develops action plans for problem resolution.
  • Constantly seeks opportunities for process improvement.
  • Reviews proposed state and federal regulations and develops comments appropriate to UTMB to be conveyed to UTMB, UT Systems and regulatory agencies.
  • Fosters a learning environment.
  • Chairs subcommittees and lead task forces.
  • Acts as a Health and Safety advisor to non-safety related committees.
  • Provides specific positive feedback to aid in development of others.  Expresses positive expectations for future performance.
  • Interprets rules, regulations, and guidelines with scientific knowledge and analytical methods to conclude appropriate decisions that may be considered innovative or leading edge.
  • Coordinates and provides interface for multidisciplinary functions within EHS and across UTMB.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Job Requirements:

  • Provides high-level technical expertise in laboratory safety, including performance of laboratory safety audits, risk assessments, exposure monitoring and researcher onboarding
  • Coordinates EHS emergency response planning including development and performance of emergency response drills as well as coordination between other stakeholders such as the Biocontainment Critical Care Unit, UT Police, Biosafety, and Institutional Preparedness.
  • Implements the Industrial Safety Program including performance of risk assessments, safety audits, and committee participation to support the safety of workers in UTMB industrial facilities
  • Develops and provides safety training on a variety of safety topics including but not limited to respiratory protection, laboratory safety, hazard communication, powered-industrial trucks, fall protection, and lock-out/tag-out.
  • Serves as a member of the EHS On-Call Team providing emergency response as needed

Preferred Education/ Experience:

Master’s degree in related field or applied science discipline and seven years of related experience; 40-hour HAZWOPER; possession of an EHS-related board certification/registration (CHP, CIH, CSP, CHMM, RBP, etc.)

Working Environment:

Standard office, hospital, clinical, and/or laboratory environments
