Summary:

The Director of Supply Chain Operations provides strategic and operational leadership across UTMB's institution-wide supply chain. This role is responsible for ensuring seamless, cost-effective, and high-quality support to both clinical and administrative functions, with oversight of logistics, inventory management, receiving, and distribution. The Director drives long-term planning, daily operations, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned with UTMB's commitment to exceptional patient care and operational excellence. Reporting to the Chief Supply Chain Officer, this position leads cross-functional teams and champions data-informed, technology-enabled supply chain practices that support organizational priorities and service line growth.

Scope: Institutional wide

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and direct all supply chain functions in logistics, inventory management, receiving, distribution, and procedural units across all campuses.

  • Develop and implement system-wide supply chain strategies that support operational efficiency, cost containment, and high-quality patient care.

  • Oversee the execution and optimization of supply chain processes for procedural and non-procedural areas, ensuring seamless support for clinical departments.

  • Support the digital transformation of supply chain operations, leveraging ERP and analytics platforms to drive automation, transparency, and data-driven decision-making.

  • Utilize advanced analytics to forecast demand, identify trends, and proactively address supply chain risks and opportunities.

  • Ensure optimal inventory levels are maintained across the full range of products, while monitoring, measuring, and reporting asset levels on an annual basis.

  • Support quality service through proper organization, staffing, resource utilization, and work allocation within the department.

  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and dashboards to evaluate operational effectiveness, service levels, and cost containment across all sites. 

  • Create an environment of teamwork and encourage creativity in a culture of continuous process improvement.

  • Coordinate and execute business continuity and emergency preparedness plans to ensure uninterrupted supply of critical products and services during disasters or supply chain disruptions.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives through Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies, focusing on process automation, waste reduction, and workflow optimization.

  • Lead change management efforts related to process improvements, technology adoption, and organizational initiatives, ensuring effective communication and stakeholder engagement across all levels.

  • Maintain a high-performance work environment characterized by quality performance, positive relationships, and a strong team orientation.

  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative leaders to plan for new service lines or expansions and align supply chain operations with patient care priorities.

  • Provide regular operational performance reports and recommendations for executive leadership, highlighting successes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Champion a culture of customer service excellence within supply chain operations, ensuring timely and accurate fulfillment of internal customer needs.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven analytical expertise, including advanced proficiency in Excel, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, and business intelligence tools.

  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare supply chain operations across both procedural and non-procedural settings.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategic priorities into operational execution through effective team management.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical teams, vendors, and stakeholders at all levels.

  • Comprehensive understanding of materials management processes, including receiving, delivery, and inventory control principles and methodologies.

  • Strong working knowledge of UTMB policies and procedures, UT System regulations, and relevant state and federal laws.

  • Highly self-motivated with a demonstrated ability to take initiative and drive outcomes independently.

  • Proven leadership skills in building, developing, and coaching high-performing teams.

  • Superior communication and problem-solving abilities, with a professional and solution-oriented approach in diverse settings.
     

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field plus ten (10) years in healthcare supply chain operations, healthcare purchasing, or other closely related field within healthcare to include five (5) years of supervisory experience.

  • Directly related professional experience may be considered in lieu of the stated educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. This substitution applies only to the educational requirement and does not replace or count toward the separately stated minimum years of experience required for the position.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in business, business administration, health administration, marketing, engineering, or related field.
  • Certification with AHRMM, ISM, APICS, Healthcare Resource Management, CMRP, CPM, or CPIM.
  • Clinical operations experience.
